A vehicle headlamp system comprises main beam lamps 22, 25 and dipped beam lamps 26 each of which includes a light source 11, a primary reflector 10, and a secondary reflector 12B which reflects both direct light from the source and reflected light from the primary reflector into the region located on one side only of a cut-off plane 18, the main beam lamps being arranged with their cut-off planes vertical and the dipped beam lamps being arranged with their cut-off planes horizontal. The lamps 25 may be omitted if desired. The secondary reflector is formed by rotating a parabola (the equation of which is given) about the Y-axis and the primary reflector 10 is either hemispherical or paraboloidal and is connected to the secondary reflector by a plane or curved reflective element 13. The source may be of the halogen type.
