[Also in Divisions E1-E2] The loading devices of the container handling vehicle of the parent Specification have a number of modifications and a lifting spreader is described. The stabilizing bars 8, 9 are modified by the provision of locking means to hold them in the vertical position which means are releasable by a piston cylinder arrangement, by the replacement of the ground-engaging shoes with extensible struts 41, 42 which may be adjusted while under load, and the bars may be made telescopic so as to be extendable during outward swinging movement. The jibs are modified by means to limit the swinging to either side and in one example to permit the adjustment of their position lengthwise of the vehicle by being mounted on plinths 101 having wheels 102 running on rails 103. Modified lifting fixture spreaders are provided in one example comprising a beam pivotable on the head 11 and provided with ropes held apart by a rod and having thimbles at their ends attachable by releasable fastening to lifting brackets on the container. In the example shown the heads 11 have carrier beams 106 which support a bridge frame 100 comprising cross-beams 110, 111 attached to the beams 106 and a central cross-beam 112 lengthwise adjustable by an hydraulic piston cylinder mechanism 115, 116 all joined by telescopic longitudinal beams 108, 109. The entire arrangement being adjustable to different length containers or to engage more than one container on a vehicle, the beams 106 and with them the beams 110, 111 being movable along the vehicle by the plinth mountings 101-103. The lifting fixtures 119, 120 which may also be provided in the centre of the beams are resiliently mounted so as to be able to adjust to the container fittings position and one provided with ram-operated releasable fastenings.
