1277001 Stabilizers; driving cabs G F FOWLER 15 April 1969 [15 Jan 1968] 57223/67 Headings B7B and B7J [Also in Division B8] A vehicle for handling containers, which may be stacked three high, or other loads, comprises a load platform 10 and four lifting units 16 at the corners thereof which can lift a container from the platform or either side thereof and move it laterally therebetween. The lifting units act on a frame 17 comprising side members 22 in which run carriages 24, Fig. 3, actuated by piston cylinder units 26 to move extendable beams 19 lengthwise of the vehicle to the correct spacing for the container in use. Each pair of carriages 24 support between them a gripping unit 18 comprising telescopic members 21, 27, 29 which can be extended by piston cylinder units to position the units in the desired lateral position. The containers are engaged by clamps 35 mounted by telescopic units 34, 37 on lugs 33 depending from the innermost telescopic member 29, so that their position can be adjusted to engage the container. The units 16 can be extended to stack three containers on the platform 10 after which the units 18 are moved apart and drums 39 on the side members 22 are actuated to tighten cords 38 between them and then are clamped to secure the container on the platform. When loads are being lifted stabilizing feet 40, Figs. 1, 2 may be lowered while when operating further from the vehicle an hydraulic operated foot 41, Fig. 5, not shown, may be extended laterally from the vehicle. To facilitate operation of the lifting units the driving cab may be moved laterally on the front end member 42 of the frame 17 by a pinion engaging a rack 15 thereon. In addition the cab may be raised and lowered relative to the frame 17.
