Traction engines, internal-combustion engine.- A tractor preferably driven by an internal-combustion engine is built up chiefly of cast metal parts which can be assembled with the minimum amount of fitting. The frame 13, Fig. 1, is a cylindrical casting with sockets 14 for the axles of the rear driving wheels 4. A forward projection 5, Fig. 5, on the frame near one driving wheel is adapted to receive one end of a wooden beam 6 which is secured therein by a block 7 fastened to the projection bv bolts &c. 9 passing through slots for adjustment. The beam has the single steering wheel 36 mounted at its front end. The block 7 has an inclined upper surface 8, Fig. 4, with slots 11<a> forming an adjustable support for the engine. A forward arm 14<1>, Fig. 7, near the other end of the frame 13 carries an adjustably mounted bearing 15 for a countershaft 16 which is also supported in a similar bearing 17 on the beam, the countershaft having pinions 20 engaging gears 21 on the road wheels. The transmission gear consists of a pinion 26 slidably mounted on the engine shaft and provided with a clutch for engagement with a second pinion 25 gearing with a gear wheel 24 carrying bevel pinions 29 engaging differential wheels 28, 30, mounted on the two parts of the divided countershaft. To facilitate steering, spring-pressed brake blocks 48 operated automatically by cables 47 oppositely connected to the steering post 43 are adapted to engage the differential wheels, the cables having intermediately placed springs 48<b> forming a lost-motion connexion. The two-part reversing pinion 31 is mounted on a rocking arm and operated by a lever 32 to bring it into engagement when required with the pinion 26 and gear-wheel 24. The driving wheels 4 have spokes 49', the outer ends of the spokes being seated in recesses 50 in the rim and the inner ends in recesses in lugs 48' on the hub, and in a slidable ring 51 secured by bolts 52.
