Abstract

123,152. Pulsometer Engineering Co., and Bj÷rnstad, J. Feh. 12, 1918. Filters with loose filtering- materials.-Water and air for cleansing a filter bed are admitted to the bed by two sets of nozzles at different levels, the inlet to the air-nozzles being at a higher level than that to the water nozzles, so that the air and water do not interfere with each other. The water-nozzles 4 are arranged at the bottoms of pockets 2 in the bottom plate of the filter, and the air nozzles 5 in the spaces between the pockets. The air enters through a central pipe 9 and passes between the pockets 2 to the nozzles 5, finally escaping through a valve 15. The water enters from the filtered-water main by the pipe 8, and after passing through the nozzles 4 and the filter bed, escapes by an overflow-box 11 and pipe 13, which also serve to supply water to be filtered. The pressures of the air and water are so adjusted that the air can depress the water below the level of the nozzles 5 but cannot reach the nozzles 4. To prevent an excessive pressure of water a lift valve, the motion of which is regulated by an adjustable stop, is placed in the pipe 8, so that water leaving the filter passes freely, but flow in the opposite direction is obstructed, but not prevented.
