Filters, cleansing; filters with horizontal filtering layers.-Stirrers 10 for agitating the surface of sand filters 7 are actuated by an internal turbine 13 contained in a chamber 9 and driven either by unfiltered water from the pipe 5 or in the reverse direction by water passing from the bed. The turbine shaft 14 is connected to the concentric shaft 11 carrying the stirrers through reducing- gears in a case 12.
