A machine for filling a compressible cushion unit, e.g. of foamed rubber, into a cover comprises a jig box 51 with two pairs of relatively movable closed sides 14, 11 and 18, 10 between which the unit is compressed, and a ram 36, 38 for pushing the compressed unit through the open end of the box 51 and through an aligned transfer chamber 52 adapted to support, at its outer end, the cover in a tensioned condition. Walls 14, 18 are displaceable by respective rams 12, 16 to compress a unit discharged from the end of the upper run of a conveyer 15. As shown, the transfer and lower channel section wall members 21, 22 pivotable, at 25, 26, towards each other against the bias of a spring 35 by a treadle 32 acting through a cable and pulley system 27-31. The cover is fitted over the end of the chamber 52 after depression of the treadle 32 so that after release of the latter the cover is tensioned by the spring bias 35. In a modification the transfer box 52 is defined between upper and lower U-shaped channels, the upper of which is displaceable by a ram. The movable side 14 carries an arm 41 engaged with an endless chain 39 and carrying a trigger 40 which operates a valve 48 to stop advance of the ram 12 when the jig box 51 is closed. The chain 39 acts through a free wheel gear 43 to intermittently advance the conveyer 15. The surfaces past which the unit is moved may be covered with p.t.f.c.
