Abstract

1,228,789. Grinding. LANDIS TOOL CO. 15 May, 1968 [16 May, 1967], No. 22971/68. Heading B3D. The machine tool comprises a work shaping member 21, means for supporting a workpiece C for oscillating movement toward and away from the member 21 comprising a cradle 14 having means 15, 17 for rotatably supporting the workpiece, a cradle supporting member 13 having means 54 mounting the cradle for oscillating movement, and a vibration damping means 22 connecting an intermediate portion of the cradle with the cradle supporting member. As described, the machine tool consists of a machine for grinding a cam-shaft C and has a grinding wheel 21 mounted on a support 20 movable transversely of the bed 11 of the machine. A carriage 12 is movable longitudin. ally of the bed and supports a swivel table 13 having the means 54 for supporting the cradle 14 for oscillation about an axis. The cradle has a headstock 15 and tailstock 17 for rotatably supporting the workpiece comprising a camshaft C. A master cam is mounted in alignment with the cam-shaft and co-operates with a follower to control the oscillation of the cradle as the cam-shaft is rotated. One or more vibration damping means 22 is/are disposed intermediate the cradle and table 13 and such means consists of a bracket 27, Fig. 6, fixed to the swivel table 13 and carrying two or more crossed reeds 35, 36 secured to the cradle. The mounting means 54 supporting the ends of the cradle on the swivel table may comprise antifriction bearings or brackets 55, Fig. 2, which are mounted on the swivel table and mounts two or more cross reeds 67, 68 secured to brackets 56 carried by the cradle 14.
