Abstract

1,184,584. Grinding. BABCOCK & WILCOX CO. 20 June, 1967 [19 Aug., 1966], No. 28302/67. Heading B3D. A back-up support for supporting intermediate portions of a workpiece W when operated on by a machine having means 11, 12 for supporting the workpiece for rotation and means for moving a tool 13 transversely to the axis of rotation, comprises a follower rest 15, means 16 for mounting the rest for movement towards the workpiece in a direction opposite to the movement of the tool towards the workpiece, an arcuate work engaging surface 21 having at least one pressure pocket 25 therein, a restrictor 26 associated with each pocket, and means for supporting liquid under pressure to each restrictor whereby, when the rest is positioned adjacent the workpiece, a pressurized film of liquid supports the workpiece to oppose the forces applied by the tool. As described, the tool is a grinding wheel 13 which is mounted on a slide movable transversely of the workpiece rotated between a headstock 11 and tailstock 12. The follower rest 15 is movable by a spring or fluid pressure device along a slide 16 and the arcuate surface 21 has portions 22, 23, 24 formed with pockets 25 supplied with fluid pressure through restrictions 26, the portion 24 being of lesser radius than the portions 22, 23 so that as the diameter of the workpiece is reduced, the portions 22, 23 become less effective and support is provided mainly by the portion 24. Also, as the grinding wheel moves towards the workpiece, the follower rest is moved by the spring or fluid pressure device towards the workpiece. The fluid supplied may be the coolant for the machine. In another embodiment, the rest consists of hinged sections 41, 42, Fig. 7, urged together by a spring 47, each section having a pressure pocket 45. In a further embodiment, the pressure pockets are formed in shoes spring-urged towards the workpiece and retained in the rest by pins. In other embodiments, the rest has a single pressure pocket or a number of pressure pockets supplied with fluid through a common restrictor.
