Abstract

[Also in Division E1] An underwater mining apparatus includes a surface vessel having one or more tanks 34, 34<SP>1</SP>, a bottom material collector connected by a conduit 12 to the tanks, a gas lift system for raising the material through the conduit to the tanks, the or each tank having a discharge duct 76 the exit end of which is below the surface of the water containing the vessel to discharge the gas used in raising the collected material and thus to maintain a predetermined pressure in the tanks and avoid the gas bubbles in the conduit from reaching too large a size. As described the vessel comprises a pair of forward and a pair of aft tanks, one pair being filled at a time, while the mined material-for example manganese nodules-in the other pair is conveyed into holds. The material may be dried during its passage on a system of conveyers 100, 110 ... by heat exchangers using heat derived from the motor driving the compressor of the gaslift system. The pressure in a tank may be increased by means of a valve 88, or by a downward extension to duct 76.
