Abstract

1419106 Removing oil from water surface D MIKANDER - MALMBERG 4 Dec 1972 [13 Dec 1971] 55867/72 Heading B1D [Also in Division B7] An apparatus for the collection of oil from the surface of water comprises a sheet 13 of deformable material, a float 14 around the entire periphery of the sheet and means for elevating part of the sheet remote from the float so as, in use, to define a closed chamber bounded by the sheet, the float and the water surface, and a suction conduit 12, which may be the said means for elevating part of the sheet, connected to the chamber for removal of oil. Figure 2 shows an apparatus comprising a circular sheet 13 of rubber or plastics and wherein the suction conduit 12 provides the support for the central part of the sheet to define a funnel shaped chamber for oil collection. In use, the apparatus is moved across the water surface. A similar embodiment is described (Fig. 3 not shown) using a circular sheet in which the middle of the sheet is supported by a buoy or float mounted beneath the sheet with the suction conduit leading downwardly through the buoy. A further embodiment using a circular sheet is described (Figures 10 and 11 not shown) wherein the central part of the sheet is supported by a balloon and the suction conduit leads via a pump to a floating sack providing a reservoir for the collected oil and weighted by a drift anchor. Figure 5 shows an apparatus of tapered cross-section designed for towing by a boat. At the stern end the float is of smaller volume than at the stern end and the stern is weighted 18 to hold it down in the water. Holes 19 are provided in the sheet leading to pipes 19' feeding below the water surface to remove water collecting on the upper surface of the sheet. A further apparatus for towing by a boat (Figs. 8 and 9 not shown) is described wherein the stern float is replaced by a bundle of air filled plastics tubes and the oil is collected from the channels formed between the tubes. The apparatus may be formed as an inflatable boat (Figure 6) having an oil reservoir 20 defined by a transverse bulkhead and a stern deck for mounting of an outboard motor 21.
