Abstract

1425365 Oil scavenging vessel SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 12 Feb 1973 [14 Feb 1972] 6690/73 Heading B1D [Also in Division B7] Apparatus for removing oil from the surface of water comprises a mobile floating skimmer provided with forward baffles 103 which permit substantially horizontal entry of the oil and water into the skimmer, and submerged bottom baffles 106 which effect downward exit of water from the skimmer. The forward baffles may comprise a tube bundle, honeycomb structure or flat and corrugated sheets. The floating skimmer or the bottom baffles may be articulated to conform to the waves at the water surface. The forward baffles may be buoyant and hinged to the sides of the skimmer. Oil gathers at a rear surface of the skimmer and may be collected by a skimmer head which may be a flexible floating foraminous sheet Fig. 1 (not shown) a raised weir Fig. 4 (not shown) or a conveyor belt with scoops Fig.. 5 (not shown), or a combination of raised weir and belt with scoops. The collected oil may be discharged into flexible bags either from a second assisting craft or directly. The bags are allowed to float on the water and may be plugged and released. The skimmer may be of catamaran type, air inflated or supported by floats, and may be transportable by air. When a rigid catamaran type, the submerged baffles are articulated and separately buoyed, the entry baffles being rearwardly hinged. A floating double "V" boom with skirts may be hinged to the front of the skimmer and two jets of a 10-20 carbon atoms primary long chain alcohol may be directed ahead of the boom to herd the oil towards the V boom.
