Abstract

1,228,027. Mortar barrels. OY TAMPELLA AB. 18 April, 1968 [27 April, 1967], No. 18436/68. Heading F3C. A muzzle-loading mortar barrel 1 is provided with elongated projections parallel to or inclined relatively to the axis of the barrel 1 and extending over part of its length and a smooth length portion 11 located at the muzzle end of the barrel, the inner faces of the projections and the smooth portion defining a cylindrical bore. The projections may be formed by longitudinal or helical grooves 2 in the bore of the barrel. The barrel may be provided with an apertured extension 3, the apertures 4 therein connecting with the grooves 2. The projections may be more closely spaced at the rear of the apertures than adjacent the apertures. The grooves have a depth between 0À2 and 2 mm. and form between 1 and 3% of the crosssection of the bore of the barrel. The grooves are rounded at their bases and edges (Fig. 2, not shown).
