Abstract

In a two-part walking mechanism of a tunnel-driving machine having a cutter headcarrying arm 1 mounted on a frame 3 carried by one part of the mechanism, the one part comprises a rigid tube 7 and bars 22 (not shown) secured between spaced structures 10, 11 carrying bracing props 5, 6 and the other part comprises a sleeve 13 slidable along the tube 7 and carrying bracing props 9. Relative movement between the sleeve 13 and the tube 7 can be caused by jacks 14 coupled between the structure 10 and the sleeve 13 in accordance with the setting or otherwise of the bracing props 5, 6 and 9 and the manner of operating the jacks. Cut material lying in front of the machine may be moved rearwards through the machine by two single chain scraper conveyers that are mounted in the machine, one to each side of the central longitudinal axis of the machine, to be displaceable in the machine parallel to said axis. The forward portion of each conveyer circulates in a plane extending transversely of the machine at right angles to the rest of the conveyer. Each of the two arms of a tubbing-inserting device mounted on the rear of the machine has a swing angle of 200' about an axis eccentric of the longitudinal axis of the machine.
