1,227,945. Spinning and finishing yarns. COURTAULDS Ltd. 26 Aug., 1968 [26 May, 1967], No. 24604/67. Headings D1P and D1W. Yarn (or a drafted bundle of fibres from which yarn is manufactured by conventional processing including further drafting) capable of being bulked, as a result of differential shrinkage of fibres, on its subjection to heat in the absence of tension in the yarn, is produced by passing through a roller drafting frame e.g. a draw, slubbing, intermediate, roving or ring-spinning frame, at least one fibre bundle e.g. a carded or gilled product such as sliver, slubbing or roving, incorporating at least 5% (preferably 20%) by weight of staple fibres which are stretchable when heated and which have lengths greater than the reach between adjacent pairs of drafting rollers, heating the bundle before or during its passage between the adjacent pairs of rollers so that the fibres are stretched (preferably to a maximum short of breaking) whilst the bundle is drafted, and cooling the bundle whilst it is tensioned. Heat-stretchable fibres may be of polyamide, polyacrylonitrile, polyolefin, polyvinylchloride The bundle may contain inextensible fibres of greater length which break during drafting. Heat may be applied by infrared radiation, contact with a heated plate or plates and/or heated fluid such as steam. Relaxation may occur during subsequent processing e.g. dyeing in a hot aqueous bath or in a steam oven.
