In a straight bar machine a driving mechanism for the thread guide and slurcock tie bar which ensures the necessary yarn guide advance comprises a variable transmission for driving both the guide and slurcock tie bar and a stroke transmission which supplements the first drive to the tie bar. The variable transmission comprises two pivoted levers 8, 10 adjustably interconnected by rod 9, and is driven by cam 1. Rod 21 driven by the transmission carries a pinion 22 meshing with fixed rack 23 and driving thread guide bar 25 via rack 24. A further pinion meshes with a movable rack 27 and drives slurcock tie bar 33. Rack 27 is displaced by cam 28 and adds an additional displacement to the bar to carry it past the thread guide at the end of each traverse.
