[Also in Divisions G2-G3] Merocyanine dyes for sensitizing silver halide emulsions are of formula (in which one of R 1 is C 1-4 alkyl, aralkyl or aryl, and the other is alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, acyloxyalkyl, aralkyl, carboxy-alkyl or -aralkyl, -(CH 2 ) m SO 3 H, -(CH 2 ) m SO 2 NHCOR or -(CH 2 ) m SO 2 NHR 5 ; R 4 is alkyl; R 5 is alkyl or aralkyl; R 3 is C 1-4 alkyl; m is 1-6; n is 1-3). The dyes are prepared by conventional condensation reactions. The examples relate to dyes in which R 1 is acetoxyethyl, ethyl or propyl and R 2 is benzyl, ethyl or 4-(N-acetylsulphamoyl)-butyl.
