Abstract

1402881 Cyanine dyes POLAROID CORP 26 July 1972 [29 July 1971] 34980/72 Heading C4P [Also in Division C2] Cyanine dyes for sensitizing photographic (especially those containing a silver halide or photoconductor) are of formula (in which each L is a methin group ; m is 1-3; Z and Z 1 each complete a heterocyclic ring system containing a 5 or 6 membered heterocyclic nucleus containing the C atom shown; X is a quaternary ammonium, sulphonium or phosphonium group; Y is SO 3 - or CO 2 -; W is an anion). The dyes are prepared by conventional condensation reactions. The examples relate tomonomethine and trimethine cyanine dyes in which Z 1 and Z each complete a benzothiazole, quinoline, naphthothiazole, benzoselenazole, benzoxazole or benzimidazole nucleus which may be substituted by methyl, chloro, methoxy, acetylamino or phenyl; R and R 1 are each a tri- or tetra-methylene group; X is N(C 2 H 5 ) 3 , N(C 2 H 5 )(CH 3 ) 2 , N(CH 3 ) 3 , N(C 6 H 5 )(CH 3 ) 2 , P(CH 3 ) 3 or S(CH 3 ) 2 ; and the trimethine chain may be meso -CH 3 or C 2 H 5 substituted.
