A sealing ring 10 between a pipe and a socket has a radial rib 11 and inwardly and outwardly extending flanges 12, 13. When the ring is inverted into the socket 15, the flange 13 is bent back upon itself in a trailing direction, to sealingly engage the socket and the trailing edge of the rib 11 engages a radial rib 19 to retain the ring within the socket. When the end of the pipe is inserted into the device, the flange 12 rolls forward on itself in the direction of insertion of the pipe to form a seal between the ring and the pipe. In a modification the flange 12 is inclined with respect to a radial plane to facilitate insertion of the pipe past the flange 12. In a further modification, each flange may be formed in its operative surface with a plurality of continuous annular grooves of which the ribs between pairs of grooves form separate seals with the surfaces against which the flange engages. In a further modification, the sleeve is provided with two or more inwardly and outwardly extending axially spaced flanges. In another embodiment the rib 11 extends radially and has a push-in and snap engagement in an annular groove in the wall of the portion 16 of the socket. Alternatively, the rib 19 in the socket may have a similar engagement with a complementary annular groove in the sleeve 10. In a further modification, the sleeve 10 may have a screw threaded engagement with the socket.
