Abstract
1,223,255. Sulphation of secondary aliphatic alcohols. MARCHON PRODUCTS Ltd. 11 April, 1968 [25 April, 1967], No. 19025/67. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] Monoalkyl sulphate salts of saturated secondary aliphatic alcohols having at least 8 carbon atoms are prepared by the addition of free SO 3 in an amount sufficient to react with from 20-80%, or preferably 50-70%, of the alcohol but insufficient to cause substantial dehydration of the alcohol or charring in the reaction mixture under the conditions employed, neutralizing the reaction mixture with a base, which may be an alkali-metal hydroxide, an alkanolamine or NH 3 , and separating the unreacted alcohol from the salt of the alkyl sulphate. The separation of unreacted alcohol may be effected by solvent extraction, preferably counter-current extraction, using a mixture of low boiling petroleum ethers and the alcohol may be recycled to the sulphation zone. The sulphur trioxide may be employed in the form of a gas and may be mixed with an inert gaseous diluent.
