Abstract
1,139,158. Olefin sulphonates. HENKEL & CIE G.m.b.H. 10 May, 1967 [11 May, 1966], No. 21715/67. Heading C2C. A process for the preparation of olefine sulphonates comprises the sulphonation of an olefine-containing mixture of hydrocarbons with gaseous sulphur trioxide diluted with air or other inert gas wherein the olefines are of formula in which R 1 and R 2 are C 1-18 straight-chain alkyl groups, R 3 is H or a C 1-18 straight-chain alkyl group, R 1 , R 2 and R 3 together contain 8-20 carbon atoms, and at least one of R 1 , R 2 or R 3 contains at least 5 carbon atoms, and wherein 1À0-1À6 moles of SO 3 are used per mole of define, the concentration of SO 3 , in the gaseous sulphonating agent is 0À5-10% by volume and the temperature of reaction is from 0-60‹ C. Examples describe the sulphonation of 2- hexyldecene-1, 7-methyl-pentadecene-6, 2- butyl-octene-1, 5-methyl-undecane-4 and a mixture of C 12-16 olefines branched at the double bond.
