Abstract
1,212,984. Sulphonated organic compounds. MARCHON PRODUCTS Ltd. 1 March, 1967 [1 March, 1967; 12 July, 1967; 30 Oct., 1967], Nos. 9735/67, 32084/67 and 49246/67. Heading C2C. Sulphonated organic compounds are produced by (a) adding free sulphur trioxide in an amount up to 30% molar excess to a sulphonatable organic compound liquid under the conditions of the reaction and (b) reacting at least some of the products from stage (a) with an amino compound capable of forming a further product therewith, this reaction being carried out in a manner such that at least part of the process of stage (a) is carried out in the presence of at least some of this further product. Specified compounds are primary, secondary saturated or unsaturated alcohols or an alkylene oxide condensate of a phenol or alcohol, olefins, ketones, fatty acids and alkanolamide of fatty acids. The reaction between the amino compound and the product of stage (a) may be carried out elsewhere than in the reaction vessel employed for stage (a) and at least some of the further compound so formed is recycled to the above reaction vessel or another reaction vessel used for a reaction between the sulphonatable material and sulphur trioxide. The sulphur trioxide may be used in the form of a gas which may contain an inert gas diluent, or dissolved in an inert solvent or in the form of a pure liquid. The end product is usually a mixture of the amine salt of the sulphonated organic material and the free sulphonic acid. The free acid may be obtained or the amino-salt may be converted into the salt of some other base by cation exchange. The sulphonated organic compounds either as salts or free sulphonates or as a mixture of the two may be used as detergents optionally mixed with other adjustments.
