Abstract
1,210,243. Sulphonation process. MARCHON PRODUCTS Ltd. 21 March, 1968 [21 March, 1967; 30 Oct., 1967], Nos. 13130/67 and 49245/67. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] Sulphonated (including sulphated) organic compounds, especially sulphonated primary, secondary, saturated or unsaturated alcohols, tallow alcohols, coconut alcohols, olefines, ketones and saturated or unsaturated fatty acids, are prepared by the addition of free SO 3 to the sulphonatable organic compound in the presence of a free alkyl ester of an oxyacid of phosphorus which is subsequently separated from the sulphonated product or its salts; preferably the oxyacid is phosphoric acid and the alkyl groups contain more than three carbon atoms. The SO 3 may be added in the form of a gas, either in the pure form or mixed with an inert gas diluent, and in a molar excess over the free alkyl ester of an oxyacid of phosphorus of 2: 1 to 4: 1. The reaction temperature may be such that the sulphonated material is kept as a liquid and the reaction product may be reacted with a base and subsequently the ester of the oxyacid of phosphorus may be extracted by solvent extraction techniques.
