Abstract

1,222,839. Vehicle-washing apparatus. O. CHRIST, [trading as OTTO CHRIST MACHINENFABRIK]. 23 Aug., 1968 [3 April, 1968], No. 40400/68. Heading B7J. A vehicle-washing apparatus includes a gantry frame 11; rotatable washing brushes 1, 2, each with a normally vertical axis but capable of arcuate displacement, by contact with a vehicle to be washed, about a horizontal axis 4 which is at right-angles to the direction of movement of the vehicle, and biased towards the vehicle by means of a helical spring 14 co-operating with a rope arrangement 15; sensing means 8 for detecting arcuate movement of each brush of a predetermined magnitude; and shifting devices 10 for shifting the washing brushes, in a direction opposite to those in which the brushes are biased, when the sensing means are actuated. Each brush 1 and 2 is suspended from a trolley 21 movably supported on a rail guide 3 which is in turn supported in bearings 5, 6 which allow arcuate movement of the rail and brush. Each brush is rotatable by a motor 12 mounted on the trolley 21. The sensing means 8 comprise switches operable, according to the direction of movement of the frame relative to the vehicle, by a stud 27 on the end of the rail 3. The gantry frame has rollers 18 movable along rails by drives 19 and carries a horizontal rotatable brush 20, vertically movable in guides in the frame side members 16. In another embodiment, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), each guide 3 is fixed rigidly to the gantry frame and supports a bearing upon which the respective brush is pivotable. The shifting device consists of a double-acting pneumatic cylinder 23 and piston 22 arranged so that the cylinder entrains the brush only when the cylinder is moving away from the vehicle towards the side of the frame 11.
