Abstract
1,222,812. 812. Electrically heated starting aids. C.A.V. Ltd. May 27, 1968 [July 3, 1967], No.30521/67. Heading F1B. A method of assembling the electrical heating element 13 in the end portion of the tubular member 10 of a starting aid comprises first securing the heating element to a thin walled tubular rod 14, secondly placing the tubular rod over the conductive member 11 and inside the tubular member and thirdly winding the heating element upon the rod by rotating the rod, the heating element being drawn through a slot 15 in the end portion of the tubular member. If desired a portion of the element may be wound on the rod before insertion into the tubular member. Specification 1,127,454 is referred to. 1,222,820. I. C. engine fuel systems; stopping engines. R.E.L. 120D. Nov.26, 1968 [Dec.2, 1967], No. 54912/67. Headings F1B and F1K. [Also in Division F2] To prevent the fuel tank 7 of a fuel-injection I. C. engine from fully emptying, with consequential occurrence of air locks in the fuel system, a float-operated valve 1 located in the tank obstructs the outlet from the tank if the level in the tank falls below a predetermined level, whereby flow of sufficient fuel to permit continued running of the engine is prevented, so that the engine stops. A controlled leakage of fuel may be allowed, either through the valve or through a small by-pass bore, so that the vacuum occurring in the fuel system after the engine has been stopped is gradually removed, thereby reducing the risk of air leakage into the fuel system through imperfect joints. The vacuum may be used to actuate a piston 49 to close down the fuel injection pump 43 by means of the rack 45. Instead of a piston 49, a solenoid controlled by a vacuum switch may be used, and the vacuum switch may also control a solenoid-operated stop cock located upstream of the pump 43. The stop cock may instead be operated through a diaphragm by the difference in pressure between a point in the fuel line 11 adjacent the stop cock and a point adjacent the valve 1.
