Abstract
1,222,257. Jet mills. E. F. FAY, 8 Aug., 1968 [20 Feb., 1968], No. 37983/68. Heading B2A. A jet mill 10, Fig. 2, comprises a circular casing 11..14 having abrasion resistant liners 15, 16 of plastics, metal or ceramic to form a cavity 19 enclosed by an annular member 20 and fastened by C-clamps 22. A discharge tube 27 for gas projects into the casing and ground material is discharged via space 29 into a collector 28. Raw material is supplied via a manifold 34 from a hopper 40, Fig. 1, by a pressurized conduit 38 and passes into the grinding cavity 19 through openings 41 in the manifold. The openings are in close proximity to grinding jet openings 45. The discharge tube 27 has a spider or varied member 46 which reduces speed loss and turbulence in the vortex. The spider 46 has vanes 47a with curved extremities 47b, Fig. 6, so that the gas is deflected upwards through passages 48 formed by the spider, and then through the terminal outlet for the spent gas. In further embodiments the pulverized material and spent gas are discharged upwardly through the discharge tube, Fig. 8 (not shown). Injection of material may be by a conventional feeder, Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown) and a vertical mill using a spider, Figs. 11 and 12 (not shown) may be used. A multi-stage jet mill may also include a spider 92, Fig. 13. An outer chamber 85 has gas nozzles 88 and communicates with a central chamber 89 in which further size reduction is effected.
