Abstract

1,221,050. Cleaning metal strip. AUSTRALIAN IRON & STEEL PTY. Ltd. June 23, 1969 [June 24, 1968], No.31692/69 Heading C7E. Metal strip is cleaned after rolling by passing it continuously through at least one set of high-pressure water sprays, the or each set of water sprays simultaneously spraying water at a pressure of at least 250 p. s. i. g. on portions of the upper and lower surfaces of said strip to remove adhered rolling oil and dirt therefrom, collecting a mixture of water and rolling oil from said strip, and thereafter separating the rolling oil and water for subsequent re-use. The water is sprayed on aligned portions of opposite strip faces, or else on non- aligned portions, with backing rolls being provided to counter the water jet pressure. The pressures of sets of water sprays may be different, and may be up to 10000 p. s. 1. g. In the figure, steel strip 1 from coiler 2 and deflector roll 3 passes through wringer rolls 4 into spray chambers 5 and 8 and out through drier 11. Fresh water from line 14 is fed to spray headers 9, and the oil-water mixture collected in chamber 8 is fed via pump 15, filter 16, and pump 17, into line 18 and spray headers 6, and the oil-water mixture from chamber 5 is pumped via 20 to reclamation zone 21 whence clean water and rolling oil are extracted for re-use at 22 and 23 respectively. If the water from 22 contains fine iron particles, these may be removed magnetically.
