Abstract

1,155,306. Descaling metals. A.P. SCHMIDSRAUTER. Sept. 14, 1966, No.41054/66. Heading C7E. Metal articles are descaled by spraying a liquid descaling agent heated to 40-80‹ C. on to the encrusted surfaces of the articles under a pressure of 8 atmospheres, e.g. placed in a housing 7 containing jet equipment 6 fed continuously or intermittently via pressure interrupter 5 by a feed pump 3 from a reservoir 1 containing a heating device 2, and then collecting the used agent e.g. in a sump 9 below an open work floor, separating the solids from it e.g. in a removable receiver 10 and a fine filter 11, and feeding it back for reuse e.g. into the reservoir 1 until the agent is exhausted. The process is applicable to removing concrete residues from building equipment and hardness deposits from cooling, heating and water-treating plant. The agent may comprise a 25 or 30% phosphoric acid solution with 3-5% of a wetting agent, 3% of an oxidizing additive, such as per-oxy-diphosphoric acid or its potassium salt or persulphuric acid or ammonium persulphate, and 0À005% Congo red as indicator; 2% of zinc nitrate or manganese sulphate may be optionally present.
