Abstract
1,221,024. Arc electrodes. D. G. BYKHOVSKY, A. Y. MEDVEDEV, Y. V. ROSSOMAKHO and V. A. KOSS. 14 Feb., 1969 [15 Feb., 1968], No. 8041/69. Heading H5H. A cooled copper or copper alloy cathode holder 2 with a zirconium or zirconium alloy insert 14 is characterized by a metal barrier layer 15 which prevents the formation of intermetallic compounds between the copper and zirconium. Preferrred metals are tungsten, molybdenum, chromium, tantalum, niobium and vanadium. The layer 15 is applied by electro-deposition or vacuum spraying on either the holder 2 or insert 14, or may be fitted into holder 2 by mechanical means. The arc discharge 5 passes through one or more nozzles 3, 7 separated by insulating gaskets 12. Applications to cutting, removing surface defects from metal castings, nitriding, case-hardening and heating chemically active gases are mentioned. The absence of intermetallic compounds enables the copper to conduct heat away from the zirconium insert efficiently, thereby prolonging its optional life.
