Abstract
737,043. Electric arc furnaces. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. June 30, 1954 [July 1, 1953], No. 18231/53. Class 39 (3). In a furnace for melting metals of high M.P. in which arcs are passed from one or more electrodes to the surface of the metal in a watercooled metal crucible, the non-consumable electrode 2 is raised at intervals as fresh metal is added to the crucible, and a scraping device comprising a steel knife-edged ring 9 is clamped by a ring 10 to the lower side of a gas seal 4 through which the electrode passes, in order to remove metal deposits from the surface of the electrode. The gas seal comprises neoprene gaskets 4 and preserves an inert gas or vacuum in the furnace. The electrode is of copper plated with chromium. Metals or alloys to be melted are titanium, zirconium, molybdenum, thorium, hafnium, tantalum or chromium and are added as a sponge or powder.
