Abstract
1,219,900. Electrolytic production of magnesium. NATIONAL LEAD CO. Dec.21, 1967, No.58120/67. Heading C7B. Magnesium metal and chlorine are produced by electrolysing at a temperature above the melting point of magnesium a molten salt bath comprising by weight 5 to 25% magnesium chloride and 5 to 55% lithium chloride, the balance consisting of at least one other chloride of an alkali or alkaline earth metal except for small amounts of other salts thereof and impurities, the density of the molten bath being greater than that of magnesium at temperatures in the range of 750 to 900‹C. The molten bath may include calcium, potassium and sodium chlorides and preferably its density exceed that of molten magnesium by 0.034 g/cc at an operating temperature of 750 to 900‹ C. e.g. ca 800‹ C. The molten salt bath used may alternatively consist initially of molten impure magnesium chloride salt containing minor amounts of alkali and alkaline earth metal chlorides including lithium chloride and other salts of alkali and alkaline earth metals such as sulphates, electrolyses being effected to generate chlorine and molten magnesium and periodic additions of impure magnesium chloride are made to replace the magnesium chloride consumed until the lithium chloride content is within the range of 5 to 55% by weight, whereafter upon subsequent additions of impure magnesium chloride a sufficient portion of the bath is removed to maintain the lithium chloride content within this range and the density of the bath above that of molten magnesium. A typical impure magnesium chloride used contains by weight of 81% MgCl 2 , 7% CaCl 2 , 3% each of NaCl and KC1, and 1% LiCl. The electrolysis cell employed is identical with that of Specification 1,144,866.
