Converting reciprocating motion into rotary motion. - A variable - speed of drive in either direction is transmitted between two shafts by a lever 7 connected at one end 6 from the driving- shaft through gearing 2, 3 and a connecting- rod 5, and carrying a nut 11 connected to the driven member and adjusted by the rotation of its screw 13. The nut 11 is connected by a rod 12 to a toothed ring 21 engaging a series of pinions 22 connected by one-way clutches to a second larger series 26 of interengaging pinions, adjacent members of which may be alternatively brought into engagement with a pinion on the driven shaft for forward or reverse drive, or as shown in the Figure, an intermediate pinion 31 gearing with the driven pinion 30 is carried on a disk 32 which may be adjusted by worm gearing 34, 33 to engage the pinion 31 with the desired pinion of the series 26. The rod 12 may, according to the adjustment of the nut 11, continuously rotate or oscillate the ring 21. For an additional speed, the pinion 31 may be geared directly with the wheel 2 or 3. The position of the nut 11 is adjusted during the movement of the lever 7 to vary the speed by moving one-way detents on hand-controlled rods 18, 19 into the path of a bevel-wheel 16 or of a wheel 17 fixed to the wheel 17. which gears with a bevel-wheel 15 secured on the screw 13. The Specification as open tn inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the following additional matter. The rod 12 may be connected directly to the toothed series 22. The lever 7 may be operated by a reciprocating driving-member and may operate a reciprocating driven member. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
