Abstract
1,217,422. Glass ampoules. ROTA APPARATE-UND MASCHINENBAU DR. HENNIG K.G. 10 Jan., 1968 [10 Jan., 1967; 10 Feb., 1967], No. 1430/68. Heading C1M. A process for filling glass ampoules having a hermetically closed spear and containing gas at atmospheric pressure comprises heating the tip of the spear with a pointed flame to form an opening therein, which is small relative to the diameter of the spear, enlarging the opening by additional action of the or a further flame, filling the opened ampoules, and sealing the filled ampoules using the or a yet further additional flame. Preferably the ampoules have spherical spears 12 (Fig. 4) these being heated by a burner flame 13 inclined to the longitudinal axis of the ampoule to form an opening; although the opening is partially formed by increased pressure in the ampoule caused by the heating. The hole is then enlarged to a desired diameter by further action of flame 13. Alternatively, a conical tool head may be used to effect enlargement of the opening, with either the ampoule or tool head being rotated. In a continuous process (Fig. 9) closed ampoules are vertically mounted at A, rotated at B whilst heated by a burner 24 and the opening enlarged by tool 25, flushed with inert gas at C, filled at D, flushed again at E, sealed at F and stored at G.
