Abstract
1,216,972. Transformers. IRD MECHANALYSIS Inc. 13 Jan., 1969 [11 Jan., 1968], No. 1856/69. Heading H1T. A proximity transducer is made by winding a coil 23 of wire in a groove between forward, 11, and rearward, 13, portions of a non-metallic bobbin portion 11, 12, 13 (Fig. 1, not shown); inserting and securing the bobbin portion entirely within a metallic cylindrical sleeve 16, as shown; and cutting off the forward end of the sleeve 16 and the forward end of the forward portion 11 of the bobbin along the line 25-25, so that the coil 23 is rigidly secured in the sleeve 16 adjacent to its cut-off end (27) (Fig. 3, not shown). The forward end of the sleeve and bobbin may then be machined to achieve the required response characteristic for the probe. The bobbin may be secured by an encapsulating material such as epoxy resin with which the sleeve 16 is filled. Grooves 17, 18 enable connections to be made and a central well 28 may be provided for a temperature-sensing device. An enlarged cylindrical portion 15 is originally attached to the bobbin portion to limit the entry of the bobbin portion into the sleeve.
