In a method of continuously processing thermoplastic yarns e.g. as part of a false-twist crimping operation, perhaps in a machine for making torque-stretch yarns, yarn passes through a capillary passageway (or a series thereof) to a position along the length of which is fed a heated plasticising fluid e.g. hot air or steam, under pressure and perhaps at a temperature above the second order transition temperature of the yarn material. The fluid flows along the passageway from the position of its introduction, against capillary reaction, in contact with the yarn and without undue turbulence, finally passing outwardly through capillary "seals": if the yarn is undergoing twist (or back twist) the fluid is caused, as by "rifling" or internal contouring, to flow with helical motion in the same sense thereas. Heat may be added to the fluid e.g. by external electrical elements or a heat sink, as it passes along the passageway: thus, steam may be saturated on supply and be subsequently superheated upstream and perhaps downstream of is entry. Several stations of a yarn processing machine may be supplied with the fluid from a common source and supply pipe with main and individual valve controls.
