Abstract

1339026 Bulking yarns RICHEN CO Inc 27 Nov 1970 [28 Nov 1969 19 Oct 1970] 56415/70 Heading D1F Textured yarn is relaxed and set, e.g. to to produce a uniformly bulked, 4000 denier, 2-ply, multifilament, polypropylene carpet yarn, by passing it through an inlet nozzle into a convoluted tubular conduit, injecting heated air through the nozzle to carry the yarn through the conduit whilst maintaining a desired twist, applying heat to the conduit to impart radiant heat to the yarn therein and passing the yarn from the conduit through an outlet nozzle into which cold air is admitted to cool the yarn and set it in the relaxed state. The injected air may be at a temperature of 200-500‹C under a pressure of 5-20 p.s.i. and may run at a speed of 100-400 yds./min. In the apparatus shown in Figs. 1 and 3, yarn is supplied from a cone 1 by the action of feed and pressure rolls 2 and 3, a stop-motion microswitch 4 and solenoid 5 controlling the yarn to arrest the feed if the yarn stops moving through the apparatus.. The yarn is thus positively fed into an inlet nozzle 6 wherein injected hot air contacts the yarn and carries it into a heating apparatus whence treated yarn emerges through outlet nozzle 11 and passes to a reservoir 13 of cooling apparatus 12 wherein cooling and setting of yarn is facilitated and yarn withdrawn from the reservoir passes under tension bar 15 to winding apparatus 14. At each heating unit of a multistation heater, Fig. 2 (not shown) yarn is fed through nozzle 6 and hot air is injected from a tube 31 by a gun heater 30 supplied with preheated air by a tube 32 leading from a tank 33 itself supplied by air tube 34 via control valve 35, Nozzle 6 leads to tubular conduit 21 formed by convolutions 40 around tank 33 and the heating of which is augmented by electrical heating means 36. A temperature sensing device 37 in a yarn tube 38 is connected to a control, Fig. 6 (not shown) and is corelated with heater 30 to regulate the temperature of the air passing through tube 38. Inlet nozzle 6, Fig. 4, comprises a metal block 45 in which are formed yarn and air passageways 46 and 47 intersecting in such manner that no twist is added to or removed from the travelling yarn, a senser 48 and controller 49 are connected to heater 30 and tube 31 to regulate the temperature of air entering the nozzle. Outlet nozzle 11, Fig. 5, comprises a block 52 in which are formed coaxially aligned passageways 50, 51, ridged at 53 to retain conduit 21; a passageway 54 leads to opening 55 connected with a tube 56 for injection of cold air. The cooling apparatus shown in Fig. 1 may be replaced by a cooling basket comprising a convoluted spring (80) of metal or plastic. The yarn may be of nylon, acrylic, rayon, cellulose acetate, polyester or polyolefin.
