Abstract

1,216,472. Uses of luminescence. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 25 Jan., 1968 [27 Jan., 1967], No. 4091/67. Heading C4S. An electroluminescent panel includes first and second continuous electrodes 16, 19 with insulating backing sheets 10 and 12, at least one being translucent, electroluminescent layer 17, and a plurality of pairs of contacts 25, 28 exposed at the outer surface of one of the backing sheets and connected to the first and second electrodes respectively. The pairs of contacts are spaced apart over the area of the panel to allow sub-panels in a range of shapes to be cut, each having at least one of the contact pairs. Sheets 10, 12 and also 11 may be of acrylic resin, and one preferably sprayed with synthetic rubber resin prior to the application of epoxide rubber adhesive layers 20, 22 incorporating a polysulphide modified epoxide resin. Layers 17, 19 and barium titanate dielectric layer 18 may be particulate materials in a polyurethane binder serving as adhesive, the particulate material for electrode 19 and also electrode 16 being of silver. Moisture barrier layers 15, 21 may be of fluorinated plastics material. Colour filler 23 and opaque sheet 24 with indicia 24A may be included. Contacts may be made by copper plates 25, 28 (also Fig. 2, not shown) with strip 27 and bus-bar 26 connecting the front electrode. Bus-bar 26 and acrylic resin 29 prevent moisture ingress. Edges may also be protected by insulating bush (42), (Fig. 4, not shown) or acrylic resin (44) and (46) in rebates (43) and (45) respectively. Alternatively the filler may be modified epoxide adhesives. Thickness are disclosed and cutting techniques discussed. The terminals may be connected by strips, wires or printed circuits and flying leads may be attached directly to plates 25 and 28.
