Abstract
1,250,797. Electroluminescence. MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO. Ltd. 24 Dec., 1968 [28 Dec., 1967], No. 61286/68. Heading C4S. A flexible electroluminescent display system comprises an EL layer 4, a flexible support film sheet of dielectric material 3, plate electrode 5, foraminous electrode 2 and a conductive material, e.g. a low resistance liquid such as water, or moisture, applied to and in electrical contact with a selected area of the foraminous electrode and closing the openings in such area. Letter and figure displays are specified, sheet 3 is preferably of high dielectric constant and strength and may be polyethylene terephthalate, electrode 5 may be evaporated Al or a transparent Au layer, layer 4 of green emitting ZnS: Cu or Al in a plastic binder such as urea resin, 50 Á thick, optional resin layer 1 of epoxy resin, and electrode 2 may be of 10 Á W wires spaced 100 Á, desirably a dimension greater than the spacing of electrodes 2 and 5, or a plurality of Al strips or may be reticulate e.g. a mesh or evaporated reticulate film, and layers 4 and 3 together may be 60 Á thick.
