A portable electric battery lamp comprises a bulb holder portion and a battery holder portion joined together by a push fit. the two portions being rotatable relative to one another to switch the light on or off. A plastic housing 1 has a groove 2 in it to receive the ribs 5 of four members 4 on a knurled plate 3. A square battery 8 is mounted on the plate 3 and may be rotated to stop 7 to bring its contacts 9, 10 into engagement with contacts 21, 22. A plastic plate 15 is secured to housing 1 byrivetes 11 angle iron 12 and bolts 14 which pass inside the glass 16 and through plate 17. Between the glass 16 and the plate 15 there is provided a sealing ring 19. The bolt 35 securing the handle 38 also passes over the top of bolts 14 thereby locking them in place. A flasher unit is contained in 20 and electrical connections are made to bulbs 28, 33 through conductive tracks on plates 25, 31 and screw springs 29, 30. The lamp is turned on or off by rotating plate 3. In another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the battery housing (40) is closed at one end and the four ribbed members (44) are provided on the plate (43) immediately beneath the flasher unit 20 and engage the inside of the upper rim of the housing. In another embodiment (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) a lamp without a handle is provided wherein a transparent plastic dome (52) is push-fitted into the battery housing (50). The housing is provided with a lower plate (56) which has an edge (57) which fits into a groove (58) at the lower rim of the housing. In modifications, push-fits at the top and bottom of the housing may be provided both of which may have to be rotated to switch the lamp on and off. The container 20 and its contacts may be modified so that in one position of the contact 10 intermittent light is obtained whilst in the other there is continuous light.
