Abstract

1,215,901. Lasers. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 22 April, 1969 [25 April, 1968], No. 20476/69. Heading H1C. In an infra-red gas laser having a discharge tube 1 more than one and a half metres long, cataphoretic segregation of the water vapour content of the gaseous active medium is prevented by provision of a tube 11 between the ends of the discharge tube 1, the mean inside diameter of tube 11 being less than one third that of tube 1. The active medium is a mixture of CO 2 , He, N 2 and water vapour, and the latter may be formed in situ from hydrogen and any traces of oxygen present. The discharge tube 1 has a concave quartz seal 6 coated with a gold reflector 7. A flat germanium sheet 8 acts as a partially transmitting mirror at the other end of the tube 1. A zeolite rod 10 saturated with water acts as a water replenisher at the anode end of tube 1, the anode and cathode being formed respectively from platinum cylinders 4, 5 in tubes 2, 3.
