Abstract

1,176,308. Gas lasers. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 1 Oct., 1968 [4 Oct., 1967], No. 46579/68. Heading H1C. In a gaseous infra-red laser the active medium comprises a mixture of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, helium and hydrogen, the last gas being at a partial pressure of 0À2 Torr. The gaseous active medium is contained in a quartz tube closed at one end by a hollow ground quartz block coated with a gold layer and at the other end by a flat germanium plate to form an optical resonant cavity. The active medium is pumped by an electric discharge between two hollow platinum cylindrical electrodes. The partial pressures of the remaining gases may be 1 Torr C0 2 , 2À5 Torr N 2 , and 11 Torr Helium.
