Abstract
1436730 Lasers RCA CORPORATION 28 Aug 1973 [28 Aug 1972] 40476/73 Heading H1C To limit transverse modes in a gas discharge laser in which lasing takes place in a tube 12-6, Fig. 6, closed at its ends by windows or mirrors, the bore 14-6 of the tube has an enlarged portion 32-6 at one end which houses a cylindrical insert 42 of lesser internal diameter than that of the tube bore 14-6. In an alternative construction, Fig. 2, the insert consists of two portions 38, 40 with a polarizing window 36 located between them at the Brewster angle. The insert or its portions may be slightly distorted in cross-section for securing purposes. The arrangement is intended for use in the prior art laser shown in Fig. 1, in which a gas discharge extends between a cathode 26 and an anode 24 along a path which includes the tube 20 and a side port 22.
