Abstract

1,160,649. Lasers. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 25 May, 1967 [28 May, 1966], No. 24318/67. Heading H1C. A gaseous infra-red laser comprises a discharge tube closed at one end by means of a plane parallel plate of germanium arranged at right angles to the laser output beam and having a surface which has previously been etched to remove infra-red absorbent surface layers produced by polishing. The plate acts as a resonator reflector as well as an end window for the discharge tube. The other end window and reflector is a concave mirror coated with gold. The active medium may consist of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, water vapour and helium at respective partial pressures of 1, 2À5, 0À2 and 8 Torr. The pressure of argon, krypton and hydrogen present as impurities should be less than 10<SP>-2</SP> Torr, and that of xenon less than 10<SP>-6</SP> Torr.
