In a method for thermally pressing textile webs to achieve a cylinder pressing effect a web having a moisture content of 10 to 17% by weight is continuously passed between two pressing surfaces, one or both of which revolves, acting with a pressure of 1.5 to 15 Kg./cm<2>. During treatment the web is heated to a temperature of 140‹C and cooled immediately after leaving the pressure surfaces. The pressing surfaces comprise two drums 6, 8 about which is driven an endless metal belt 9. A web 13 fed axially parallel to a cylinder 6 is deflected by member 11 into the spandrel between belt 9 and drum 6, passing between spray nozzles 16 to give it the desired moisture content before contacting the drum 6. After a first pressure stage extending through 180‹ of the rotation of drum 6 the web is lifted off belt 9 by a roller 17, whilst the belt is cleaned by a brush 18. The web then feeds into the spandrel between belt 9 and drum 8 for a second pressure stage, whereafter it passes a roller 20, cooling nozzles 21 and is finally deflected from the device axially parallel to drum 8 by a member 12. The web is heated by infra-red heaters 19.
