Abstract
1,214,830. Rotary printing machines. HARRIS INTERTYPE CORP. 22 Dec., 1967 [28 Dec., 1966], No. 58500/67. Heading B6C. [Also in Division B8] In a rotary, offset, lithographic printing press where the sheet feeder and the delivery mechanism operate in timed relationship to the press, control means automatically interrupt the feed of sheets to the press during the period when an auxiliary stack support means is being interposed between the main stack support and the sheets delivered from the press. The throwing-on of each of the printing units (A, B and C, Fig. 1, not shown) is controlled in sequence as the leading sheet passes through the press. When the press is to be switched-off each of the units is thrown-off in sequence as the last sheet passes through, the speed of the press being maintained until the last unit is thrown off after which the press runs at "trip-slow" speed. A master trip is provided which enables all units to be thrownoff without delay and the feeder stopped. Trip mechanisms are provided for the inking rollers, the plate cylinders and the blanket cylinders of each printing unit each trip mechanism comprising a tripping cam and a cam follower which is positionable so that the cam throws the unit on or off depending upon the energization of one or the other of a pair of solenoids. Once a solenoid has been set the cam trips the unit at the correct time in the machine cycle. Detecting faulty feed.-In response to a failure to detect a sheet registered at the front stops a control device stops the feeder and throws-of the printing units in sequence as the last correctly fed sheet passes through the press. Insertion of auxiliary stack support.-In response to the operation of a control for interposing the auxiliary stack support the feeder is disabled for a predetermined number of feed cycles and the printing units are thrown off and then on again as the gap in the feed passes through the press, the interposition of the platen being effected "in the gap". When the press is set to operate in this manner the faulty feed detector is disabled.
