Abstract

[Also in Divisions B3 and F4] The invention relates to a process and an apparatus in which two strips, which may be P.V.C. strips, 1 and 2, Fig. 6, are rolled together after printing a tube-circuit A on strip 2 in a stop-weld material and the composite strip 10 produced is sheared, 9, into panels 14, and in which a marking is made on strip 2 prior to rolling but before shearing, the shearing operation being controlled as a function of the length of strip delivered after detection of the marking. The marking may be a punch-hole in strip 2 detected by a mechanical probe, Fig. 17 (not shown), or an insert of a material having a composition different from that of the strip and detectable by means of a magnetic, X-ray, Fig. 22 (not shown), or an ultrasonic detector, Fig. 23 (not shown). In certain cases the stopweld material may constitute the marking by being opaque to X-rays or including a radioisotope of short half-life detectable by means of a Geiger or scintillation counter. The shearing station, Fig. 20, comprises fixed speed feed rolls 193, continuously feeding the composite strip 10 into a region U in which a loop 10a of the strip may be formed, staggered feed rolls 196 operable at two speeds, fast and slow, the fast running speed being sufficient to take up the loop 10a, a length measuring device 42, a detector 17 and a crank and eccentric operated shear blade 12. The rolls 196 are driven at their two speeds by a fast constantspeed motor 198 and a slow speed motor 199 through a clutch member 210. With the strip at high speed the marking is detected by detector 17d 1 which switches the rolls 196 via clutch 210 to slow speed running. The mark is then detected by detector 17d 2 which engages the measuring device 42, which comprises a friction wheel 206 driving a magnetic sprocket 207 in front of a magnetic core 208 wound with a coil 209 which emits a series of pulses on rotation of the sprocket. When the number of pulses corresponding to a predetermined length has been received by a comparator (18), Fig. 1 (not shown), the motor 199 is stopped and the shear actuated.
