Abstract

1,214,645. Determination of oxygen. W. WALISCH. 16 Sept., 1968 [26 Sept., 1967], No. 43854/67. Heading B1X. The oxygen content of an organic sample is determined by pyrolysing the sample and entraining the gaseous pyrolysis products in a stream of suitable carrier gas, passing the gas stream over a finelly divided mixture of nickel and carbon heated to such a temperature that the oxygen in the gaseous pyrolysis products is quantitatively converted to carbon monoxide, absorbing gases other than CO, inert gases, N 2 , H 2 and CH 4 from the gaseous stream, oxidising the CO to CO 2 without substantially affecting any CH 4 present and determining the amount of CO 2 present in the resulting gas stream. Carrier gas, e.g. helium +1 %H 2 is supplied at constant pressure from cylinder 10 by means of valves 11 and 12 and by means of the arrangement of valve 19, tube 20 and waterfilled vessel 21 the pressure of gas in the apparatus is kept constant. The sample in platinum boat 22 is inserted into the hot zone 17 of the pyrolytic tube 16 by means of a quartz rod 23 having a magnetic portion 25 associated with a further magnetic portion 26 outside tube 16. The gaseous pyrolysis products are carried by the carrier gas over the nickeled carbon charge 17 wherein oxygen is converted to CO, the resulting mixture being passed via line 27 to an absorption tube 28 containing layers of soda asbestos 28a, sodium thiosulphate 28b, soda asbestos 28c and magnesium perchlorate 28d. The 'remaining mixture of inert gases, CO, N 2 , H 2 and CH 4 passes on to oxidation tube 30 at 250‹C where the CO is oxidised to CO 2 , H 2 to H 2 O while CH 4 is unchanged and the water is retained in absorption tube 31 containing magnesium perchlorate. The CO 2 , N 2 and CH 4 in helium pass into the measuring cell 32 of a symmertical catharometer 33 wherein the CO 2 is absorbed in tube 35.
