Abstract
1, 174, 261. Flame ionization detectors. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 16, 1967 [Oct. 28, 1966], No.48483/66. Heading G1N. The total organic matter in an aqueous liquor is determined by oxidizing a sample of the liquor by bringing it into contact with a solid oxidizing agent which is insoluble in the liquor, reducing the carbon dioxide so formed to methane by mixing it with hydrogen and bringing the mixture into contact with a suitable catalyst and quantitatively measuring the methane formed by means of a flame ionization detector. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the sample is injected from a syringe (not shown) inserted through a silicone rubber seal D and extending into the oxidizing agent B, which may be copper oxide at 850-900‹ C. A stream of nitrogen carrier gas is admitted at E. The catalyst K for the reduction comprises firebrick having a layer of adsorbed nickel at 300-350‹ C. Hydrogen for the reduction is a 1:1 v/v mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen admitted at I. A drying tube L contains self-indicating silica gel and a further drying tube M contains silica gel. Burner gas for the flame ionization detector is a 1:1 v/v mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen admitted at P. Air is supplied at S. Known samples of methane may be injected through a silicone rubber seal H for calibration purposes. Also, if the liquor contains a significant amount of carbon dioxide, this can be determined by injecting a sample through seal H. An auxiliary heater G ensures vapourization of the sample.
