Abstract
1,214,217. Electrostatic charging device. RANK XEROX Ltd. July 15, 1968 [July 19, 1967], No.33563/68. Heading G2H. An electrostatic charging device comprises an endless insulating layer of a material insensitive to light emitted by a corona discharge and a mechanism to transfer by contact the charge, produced by the said corona discharge, from the surface of the endless insulative layer to a photo-conductive layer in a position not reached by light from the discharge. In a first embodiment fig.1 the endless insulative layer 12 is formed on the surface of an earthed, metallic drum 11 driven by a motor. The layer 12 is charged by a corona discharge device 2 comprising a fine wire electrode 21 and an earthed metal case 22. Photo-sensitive paper 4 is fed through the apparatus between the drum 11 and a pressure roller 3. In another embodiment Fig. 2 (not shown) an endless belt (1) passing over two revolving rollers and having an insulating layer (12) on a conducting layer (14) performs a similar action to the drum and the pressure rollers (3, 3<SP>1</SP>) are electrically biassed to assist charge transfer.
