Abstract
1,213,129. Shoe brakes. G. A. BLACK. 12 Jan., 1968 [27 Jan., 1967], No. 4147/67. Heading F2E. In an external or internal shoe brake, at least one shoe 2, 3 is pivotable about a single point 4, 5, the angle of wrap being disposed asymmetrically about the point of contact on the brake path of a tangent from the pivot 4, 5, the greater portion of the angle of wrap being closer to the pivot 4, 5 and said portion being such that the effective point of action of the applied force lies on the tangent. The tangents of the two shoes will be parallel. In the brake shown in Fig. 4, for a mine winder, the shoes 2, 3 are applied against a brakepath 1 by action of a spring nest 15 through a bell-crank 13 and released by means not shown. Fig. 3, not shown, is a graph showing the relationship between the angles of wrap above and below the line e passing through the centre and through the point on the brake path contacted by the tangent through the pivot 4. The lining material should have a safe dissipation not less than 1 h.p. per square inch.
